Snack Shack

What is the Snack Shack?

The Snack Shack is one of the center points at camp and we sometimes talk about it as if everyone knows what it is…but the reality is that many parents don’t! Here are answers to many of the most common questions we get asked about the Snack Shack so you’re more familiar with our camp lingo (well, one phrase at least).

During breaks, campers can buy everything from snacks and drinks to craft kits and clothing at the Snack Shack

What is the Snack Shack and when is it open?

The Snack Shack is a place where campers and staff can purchase snacks, and camp clothing and souvenirs, and is located at a central location on each campus. It’s a great place for campers to hang out with their friends and unwind. The Snack Shack is open daily from 9:30 am to 3:45 pm. Campers typically go to the snack during down time, lunch and recreation time.

How do Campers pay for Snack Shack purchases?

The Snack Shack runs on an account system or cash. Parents can add money into their child’s discretionary fund in Campminder before arriving at camp.  Campers use that fund to pay for their items. With every transaction, campers' purchases are recorded in Campminder, which you can review anytime. It’s a great way for kids to learn about budgeting and staying within their means for the week!

Can My Child Bring Cash to Camp?

Yes. We highly recommend that only the older campers (Grades 5 and higher) bring cash to camp. However, if you create a discretionary fund in Campminder for your camper, they never lose their cash.  It also allows you to monitor what your child is spending their money on.

If you do send your camper with cash, please only send a small amount of money with your child.  We are not responsible for any lost or stolen money.

What can Campers buy at the Snack Shack?

We carry a wide variety of items at the Snack Shack. We design and sell awesome Cedarbrook clothing and souvenirs that campers can buy to show their camp spirit and remember their experience after they return home. We also sell food items like pizza, ice cream, water, juice, and soda at the Snack Shack. The Snack Shack is open between meals so campers can grab a snack if they want.

While the Snack Shack is a nut free environment (just like the rest of the camp), campers with other specific allergies (gluten, food dyes, etc.) should be aware that some products we sell may contain allergens.

Campers can also purchase personal crafts and kits from activities that they have learned over the summer.

How can I add money to my Child’s Snack Shack Discretionary Fund?

The only way to add money to your child’s discretionary fund for use at Snack Shack is through Campminder.

At any time day or night, you can add additional money online through Campminder. On the Campminder dashboard select View Accounts, select “fund” to have the amount applied to your child/children’s account.

How much should I put in my Child’s Discretionary Fund?

This is an entirely personal decision, but our general recommendation is $3-$5 per day. This is a good amount to buy snacks or drinks.

Can I restrict my child from purchasing particular items?

Unfortunately we are unable to monitor each individual purchase made by each camper. With more than 400+ campers coming through the Snack Shack line each session, it would be impossible for us to restrict all purchases. We recommend talking with your camper before they arrive at camp to explain their budget and any limitations they have.

Important:  You can monitor all your camper's daily Snack Shack purchases in your Campminder portal.  In addition you should email us at info@cedarbrookdaycamp.com to inform us restrictions you may have for your child, so we can relay that to our group leaders.

What happens if my child runs out of money while they’re at camp?

We allow a child to charge up to $5 over their discretionary fund before their account is frozen.  If your child depletes their discretionary fund, they just need to let their counselor know. The counselor will notify our office and we will call home to let you know. If you would like to add additional money to their account, simply “fund” your child’s account in Campminder.

What happens at the end of the Summer?

When summer camp ends, you will receive a camp credit for any remaining balance in their Snack Shack account.  You can request that the snack shack credit be refunded.
