At Cedarbrook "What You do Matters!" We are seeking individuals who are passionate about positively impacting children's lives, demonstrate strong leadership qualities, are enthusiastic about outdoor activities, possess excellent communication skills, and are willing to go the extra mile to create for our campers a surreal summer camp environment and experience they will never forget!
We understand that the most important element in guaranteeing a successful summer camp is having a great staff. We provide campers with a staff that is the most qualified, the most experienced and the most child-focused to be found anywhere in camp industry.
What Qualities Define a Good Cedarbrook Staffer?
Our response is quite simple: there isn't a single quality that defines a great counselor, instructor, or administrator. Each individual brings their own unique skills, personality, and strengths to the camp. For every counselor who thrives in leading the group with boundless energy, there's another who offers a calming presence with their reserved and tranquil nature. Therefore, there's no single attribute that makes a person an exceptional Cedarbrook team member. Each person's distinct qualities contribute to the overall greatness of the team.
Here are 3 Things we look for when Hiring Summer Camp Staff, and How those Qualities Make the Cedarbrook experience so impactful on our Campers!
During interviews, we often emphasize that the experience at Cedarbrook is just as enriching for the staff as it is for the campers. We seek individuals who are eager to immerse themselves in the joy of the camp, joining the campers in activities, creating a vibrant atmosphere, participating in Twin Day dress-up, playing Ga-Ga, kayaking, and embracing all that Cedarbrook offers. When the staff are enjoying themselves, the campers naturally follow their lead, mirroring their enthusiasm and energy!
We are not seeking mere babysitters; we are looking for proactive staff members who actively engage with the campers
For many of our team members and campers, the activities we provide might be new experiences for them. It's possible that they have never tried canoeing, driving an off-road go-kart, or tasting a certain type of food while cooking. Being open-minded to trying something new is a quality we seek in potential team members. It also involves being willing to step out of their comfort zone. Cedarbrook offers a supportive environment for trying things we wouldn't normally do. We call this embracing "safe risks." Witnessing their counselors trying something out of the ordinary can profoundly impact our campers. It instills in them the bravery to think, "If my counselor can conquer that fear, perhaps I can as well."
Working with Cedarbrook campers is an awesome responsibility for our staff. When working with campers, our staff have the opportunity to make a massive difference in their lives. Getting to spend 7-8 weeks of the summer with campers playing, listening, mentoring, and being a friend can have a lasting impact felt way after the summer months.
Our staff have the chance to be an amplified role model because of the time they spend with the campers and by being their biggest cheerleaders/teachers.
The people who prioritize making a positive impact and model good character for our campers are the people we look for to join our staff family.
Directors, Group Leaders and Senior Staff Members are teachers, college and graduate students studying and/or working in early childhood, secondary or physical education. We also employ exceptional high school and college students as Counselors.
Our seasonal staff has a high return rate year after year, as we continue to provide them with an opportunity to work in a fun, safe and positive camp environment with plenty of growth opportunities.
To join Cedarbrook Day Camp as a seasonal employee, candidates must have prior experience working with children, complete an in-depth employment application, be interviewed by a Cedarbrook Director, complete our rigorous staff training program, and pass a series of background checks.
